Kibon Il-Jang 기본 일장
“Kee-Bohn Eel-Jahng”
10th Geup Poomsae
Basic Form #1
Kibon 1-Jang is not a Recognized Poomsae, meaning that it is not made or standardized by the Kukkiwon. Many schools come up with their own version of the form with some choosing not to have any Basic Forms at all. At NB TKD Academy Basic Form 1is changed up every once in awhile but generally keeps the same core movements based off of the Japanese originals.
The form comes from 太極 初段 型 Taikyoku Shodan Kata of Shotokan Karate-do, where it is also taught to beginners. It was likely brought to Korean martial arts by 황기 관장님 Grandmaster Hwang Kee (the founder of 무덕관 Moo Duk Kwan) in or around 1947 and was referred to as 기초 일부 Kicho Il Bu (“Kee-Choh Ihl-Boo”), particularly within the art of Tang Soo Do. Some versions of it retain the 20 movements of the Japanese version and some end after the 16th with a kihap sometimes present on move 8 as well as move 16.
