4th Dan Poomsae

Pyeongwon (sometimes spelled Pyongwon) signifies a large land that is widespread in all directions, such as a prairie. This prepresents the preservation of life as the mother of living things and the foundation of life for humans. The Poomsae was formulated based on peace and struggle, according to Bon (main body) and Yong (use).

This stage can be considered transitional — from martial techniques to martial arts. Once you have mastered the basic Taegeuk Poomsae series in the Yugeupja ranks, you will learn Koryo, Keumgang and Taebaek — the first batch of the Yudanja Poomsae. Subsequently, you will learn a step-by-step process to combine Yin and Yang by connecting 정 Jeong (body), 기 Ki (energy), and 신 Shin (consciousness). In other words, the body can be used freely in various forms, including several changes through practice.

The variety of changing moves implies that offense and defense are carried out unconsciously and that the body can return to its original calm state without agitation even after violent movements.

겹손 준비 자세 Gyeopson Junbi Jase (Overlapped Hands Ready Posture) with the left hand on top is a posture that collects and obtains energy from the lower abdomen — the source of strength in the human body. 팔굽 올려 치기 Palgup Ollyeo Chigi (Elbow Uppercut) is a short-range attack. To execute Ollyeo Chigi at a short distance, you need to learn to use force by twisting the body. 뒤 돌아 옆 차기 Dwi Dora Yeop Chagi (Back Turning Side Kick) is a new technique introduced in Pyeongwon; it helps understand the central axis, without maintaining balance it becomes difficult.

The connection of 손날 거들어 막기 Sonnal Geodeureo Makgi (Assisted Knife Hand Block), 손날 거들어 내려 막기 Sonnal Geodeureo Naeryeo Makgi (Assisted Knife Hand Downward Block), 얼굴 거들어 옆 막기 Eolgul Geodeureo Yeop Makgi (High Assisted Side Block) and 등 주먹 거들어 앞 치기 Deung Jumeok Geodeureo Ap Chigi (Assisted Back Fist Forward Strike) helps perform various offense and defense moves. These include 받아 막기 Bada Makgi (Absorbing Block), 걷어 막기 Geodeo Makgi (Parrying Block) and 잡기 Japgi (Grabbing) with the foot or hand to block attacks from various angles. Further, you will train the body to use the power outward by making an upward curve through 헤쳐 태산 막기 Hechyeo Taesan Makgi (Opening Mountain Block).”

Performance Notes:

  • Rhythm / Tempo:
Be mindful of the different intervals between movements, which are determined by whether or not the next technique is offensive or defensive.

  • Overlapped Hands Ready Posture:
Pick the right hand up with the left before evenly overlapping and ensure that the fingers are symmetrical. As in Basic Ready Posture the hands should raise to solar plexus height before finishing below the belt with 1 fist’s width from the body.

  • Knife Hand Low Opening Block:
Step your left foot into Parallel Stance as soon as you begin to separate your hands.

  • Elbow Uppercut:
The body should be turned 30° over the lead leg to ensure that the point of the elbow is at the center line with the strike ending under the chin.

  • Front Kick → Back Turning Side Kick:
The first kick should land with the foot fully pivoted at 180° prior to delivering the second kick. After the second kick has been re-chambered that anchor foot must remain in place to complete the upcoming Backward Stance.

  • Back Turning Side Kick:
Ensure that the technique is properly executed as a Side Kick and not a Back Kick — they aren’t the same thing.

  • Small Hinge → High Assisted Side Block:
The top fist should be at the hip while vertical prior to the blocking arm lifting until it is parallel to the mat before blocking across the face. The arm should finish bent at 90° with the wrist at the eye line, the same as the High Side Block half of Mountain Block.

  • Pulling Back Fist Forward Strike + Stomp → Assisted Back Fist Forward Strike:
The aiming hand is open for the first strike as it is a pulling motion while it remains closed for the second strike. The path of the strike differs from other iterations in that it starts with the fist by the ear and the elbow pointing outward prior to directing the join forward and launching the strike over top, still finishing at philtrum height on the center line. The stomping foot touches the inner knee of the anchor leg in 1st Position then finishes simultaneously with the kihap and strike.

  • Front Cross Stance:
The heel of the rear foot should be raised while the front foot stays flat.

  • Opening Mountain Block:
The dominant arm is determined by the foot which moved to complete the Riding Stance. Start with your wrists crossed at belt level and raise them to the eye level prior to opening. The ending position is the same as Mountain Block with the arms bent at 90° and the wrists at eye height.

  • Crane Stance + Diamond Block → Small Hinge → Side Kick:
The Small Hinge preparatory motion should be completed before the Side Kick is initiated.
